It is one of the only three high altitude clouds that includes cirrostratus and cirrus clouds.

It includes small amounts of liquid water droplets. 

Ice crystals are the main component of theses kinds of clouds.

The form when supercooled water drops rapidly freeze in the cloud. 

Why the form is because  it usually means rain 8-10hrs away.
